Where our stripes come from

Stripes are one of the few patterns that show up everywhere — Neapolitan beach awnings, Breton sailor shirts, Moroccan rugs, Rajasthani bandhej tonal weaves, Provençal market bags, the canvas of Slim Aarons' poolside chairs. A stripe is what happens when fabric tells the truth about how it was made.

Our stripes draw from two traditions in particular: Italian coastal (the heavy cotton stripes above the Amalfi coast in summer) and Rajasthani tonal (the centuries-old layering of soft tonal stripes onto natural cotton, sometimes printed with single blocks repeated by hand, sometimes resist-dyed before the weave). The CYC stripe takes from both: Italian rhythm, Rajasthani hand-feel. For the longer story, read our Reading the Stripes field guide.

How to style stripes

Stripes are the quiet print — the one that pairs hardest with everything loud in your wardrobe. A few rules:

  • Stripes pair with almost everything. A patterned tote demands a quiet outfit; a striped tote lets the rest of your wardrobe do the work.
  • Neutral stripes (Brown and White, Navy and Black, Gold) are wardrobe staples — they pair with denim, linen, suits, evening wear.
  • Holiday-bright stripes (Orange and White, Pink and Blue) live for summer carry — with shorts, sundresses, and the kind of holiday that earns a photograph.
  • Velvet stripes shift in tone as the pile catches light — they read as occasion-wear, even in the daytime.

Choosing between cotton and velvet stripes

  • Cotton — lighter, machine-washable on cool, designed for everyday carry. The Striped Cotton Tote is the entry point.
  • Velvet — plush, deeply pigmented, the stripes shift in tone as the pile catches light. Spot-clean only. The Striped Velvet Tote is the occasion piece.

Who it's for

Stripes are the gift for the minimalist friend who hates loud patterns, the partner who wears all-black and needs the bag to do the talking, the work bestie heading off on a holiday, the new graduate setting up their first wardrobe. They never go out of style, they age beautifully, and they tell a slow story instead of a loud one.

Care — keeping yours for years

Cotton stripe pieces: machine wash cool, line dry, iron on low. The cotton softens with use; colour ages slowly, never sharply.

Velvet stripe pieces: spot-clean with a damp cloth. Hang to revive the pile. Avoid the machine, which flattens the velvet over time.

What to expect from a handmade stripe

Each stripe is laid by hand, one impression at a time. The line is never perfectly straight — you can see where the maker's hand pressed slightly harder, or where the dye sank deeper into the weave. That's the signature of real handcraft. Mass-produced stripes have perfectly identical lines; ours don't, on purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many stripe colourways are there?

Nine in the Striped Cotton Tote: Gold, Pink and Navy, Brown and White, Pink, Navy and Black, Orange and White, Green and Navy, Orange and Blue, Pink and Blue. The velvet stripe ranges are smaller and seasonal.

Which stripe pairs with everything?

The most versatile neutral stripes are Brown and White, Navy and Black, and Gold. If you want one stripe that goes with the whole wardrobe, start there.

What's the difference between cotton and velvet stripes?

The cotton version is lighter, machine-washable, and designed for everyday carry. The velvet version has a plush hand-feel and the stripes shift in tone as the pile catches the light — designed for occasion and slower use.

Where do the stripes come from culturally?

Two traditions converging: Italian coastal awning stripes (the heavy cotton seen across the Amalfi coast) and Rajasthani tonal weave (centuries of handmade and resist-dyed stripes on cotton). Read the full story in our Reading the Stripes field guide.

How are the stripes made?

Each stripe is laid by hand using carved wooden blocks dipped in natural dye. The line is never perfectly straight, and that's the point. Mass-produced stripes are machine-roller-printed; ours aren't.

Is there a stripe home piece?

Yes — the Striped Velvet Cushion is our home edit, 40cm × 40cm, in six colourways. Same handmade velvet, designed to layer on linen sofas and quiet rooms.

Which stripe piece should I start with?

For most customers, The Striped Cotton Tote — it's the entry point, available in 9 colourways, machine washable. If you want the velvet hand-feel, the Striped Velvet Tote. For travel, the Striped Cotton Weekender.
