Stripes are the oldest pattern in textile design. Stripes on velvet are something else entirely — the structured geometry of the stripe softened by the plush pile of cotton velvet, the colour soaking deep into the weave instead of sitting on the surface. The result is a print that reads as quietly luxurious without trying.

The Striped Velvet Collection is our most refined-feeling range — handmade in Rajasthan, hand-quilted onto cotton velvet, available across totes, weekenders, travel sets, and cushions. The collection is bold in colour and gentle in texture — the rare combination of statement and softness.

The story of striped velvet

Stripes have meant many things in textile history. In medieval Europe, stripes were associated with the marginalised — heretics, prostitutes, jesters. In the 17th-19th centuries they became the uniform of sailors, then of the leisure class who adopted nautical style. In the 20th century, designers from Coco Chanel to Saint Laurent reclaimed the stripe as a symbol of effortless taste.

Stripes on cotton velvet sit in a different lineage — the upholstery fabrics of 19th-century Indian palaces, the cushions and bolsters of Mughal interiors, the curtain panels and bolster covers that have decorated Indian homes for centuries. The combination is heritage at home, applied to bags and accessories that travel.

Cotton vs cotton velvet stripes — which to choose

Stripes work on both, but they sit differently on each:

Cotton velvet stripes are softer-edged, deeper in colour, plush in hand-feel. The stripe gets a slight halo where the dye sinks into the velvet pile. Best for evening events, slower trips, statement carry. The Striped Velvet Tote is the bag you carry to the dinner that earns a photograph.

Styling guide for striped velvet

Bold velvet stripes work as either neutral or statement, depending on what you wear with them:

As a neutral: A pink-and-cream striped velvet tote pairs with almost any outfit. The plush hand-feel makes the stripe feel calm rather than loud, and the natural fibre keeps it grounded.

As a statement: A bold contrast stripe (pink + orange, navy + cream) carried with plain head-to-toe linen or all-black makes the bag the entire outfit. This is the "discovered, not advertised" approach.

How to care for striped velvet pieces

• Spot-clean only. A damp cloth lifts most marks. Don't soak the velvet.
• Don't machine-wash velvet. Machine washing flattens the velvet pile permanently.
• Hang to refresh the pile. Give the bag or cushion an occasional hang to let the velvet recover.
• Avoid prolonged direct sunlight. Sun fades natural dye over years.
• Use the hand grips for heavier loads on weekenders. Long shoulder straps are rated for 2-3 kg.

What to expect from handmade striped velvet

Every Striped Velvet piece is handmade in Rajasthan on cotton velvet, then hand-quilted with a cotton lining. Each piece is slightly different from the next. You'll notice:

Slight irregularity in stripe width and spacing. Stripes are printed by hand, by eye, one block at a time. Small variations across the body of the cloth are the signature of skilled craft.

Soft-edged stripes. The dye sinks half a millimetre into the velvet pile, giving each stripe a soft halo. Machine printing produces sharp-edged stripes; the human hand doesn't.

Velvet behaves differently in light. Run your hand across the pile and you'll see the colour shift slightly — that's the velvet catching light from different angles. Each piece has its own "lay" depending on how the pile sits.
