A field guide to choosing one bag that goes with everything — and why owning less can mean carrying more.

Fifty years on, the idea has travelled — through Donna Karan's Seven Easy Pieces, Marie Kondo's spark joy, the minimalist Instagram of the 2010s, and now into the closets of people who simply want fewer decisions in the morning.
This is the same principle applied to bags. The bag you reach for every day. The bag you take to work, to dinner, to the weekend away. The one that goes with everything.
It turns out there's a small set of rules.
What a capsule wardrobe bag actually is
A capsule wardrobe bag does three things well:
- It pairs with everything in your wardrobe. Not just most things. Everything.
- It carries what you actually need on a normal day. Laptop, water bottle, paperback, a layer for the cold.
- It ages well. It softens with use, doesn't fall apart in two years, and looks better in year five than year one.
The bag you've been using is probably almost a capsule bag. It pairs with most of your wardrobe. It carries most of what you need. It's reasonably durable.

The three-bag minimum capsule
Most people don't actually need one bag. Most people need three, and the trick is knowing which three.
1. The everyday tote
Your daily workhorse. 18 × 18 inches or thereabouts. Spacious enough for a 17-inch laptop or a rolled yoga mat or a beach day's worth of essentials. Soft enough to carry comfortably; structured enough to stand up when you set it down. Washable, ideally.
This is the bag you'll use 80% of the time. Choose this one first.
2. The occasion bag
For evenings, weddings, the dinner that earns a photograph. Softer hand-feel than the everyday — velvet, satin, or a heavier woven cotton. Still spacious enough to carry your essentials, but reads as quietly luxurious rather than practical.
Use it 15% of the time. But when you use it, you're glad you have it.
3. The travel bag
For weekends, overnight trips, the carry-on. Soft-sided, carry-on size (around 50 × 23 × 33 cm for most airlines), with a long shoulder strap. Light enough to swing onto a plane, structured enough to hold its shape for 2–3 days of clothes.
Use it 5% of the time. But that 5% is the trip you'll remember.

Choosing the everyday tote — the only decision that matters
The everyday tote is 80% of the work. Get this one right and the other two follow naturally.

A neutral colour that pairs with everything
The most versatile colour for an everyday tote is one of these four:

- Brown / camel — pairs with everything, hides marks, ages beautifully.

A neutral print on a neutral ground — a tonal stripe, a soft animal print in earth tones, a faded floral — works the same way. You're not choosing a pattern; you're choosing a colour that happens to have texture.

How to care for a capsule bag
Capsule bags do more work than seasonal bags. They need slightly more care:
- Wash cotton totes regularly. Machine wash cool, line dry. The cotton softens with each wash. Don't tumble dry on high — it shrinks the cotton.
- Spot-clean velvet pieces. Damp cloth, hang to refresh the pile. Don't machine-wash velvet; it flattens the pile permanently.
