Will Your Mat Fit? — A Field Guide to Yoga Mat Bag Sizing

Here is the question we get more than any other, usually phrased with a note of suspicion: my mat is 173cm long, so how is it going to fit in a 75cm bag?

It's a fair thing to ask, and the answer is the bit nobody explains. Once you know it, buying a yoga mat bag stops being guesswork.

The measurement that confuses everyone

A yoga mat is sold by its flat dimensions — a standard mat is around 173cm long and 61cm wide. But you don't carry a mat flat. You roll it, and when you roll it, the length disappears into the roll.

What you're left holding is a cylinder. And the length of that cylinder isn't 173cm — it's 61cm, the width of the mat. The 173cm went into the circumference.

So the number you need is not the one printed on the box.

The two numbers that actually matter

Roll your mat up the way you normally would, then take a tape measure to it twice:

  • The length of the roll — measure end to end along the cylinder. For most mats this is 60–65cm.
  • The diameter — measure straight across one open end. This is the one people forget, and it's the one that catches them out. A thicker mat makes a fatter roll.

Thickness is what drives the diameter. A slim 3–4mm travel mat rolls up neat. A cushioned 6mm mat rolls up considerably fatter, and if you roll a towel or a strap in with it, fatter again.

What our bags take

Every CYC yoga mat bag is built to the same internal size:

  • Length: up to 75cm
  • Diameter: up to 14cm
  • Slight variation between bags — they're handmade, and we'd rather tell you than pretend otherwise

Set that against a standard 173 × 61cm mat and you have roughly 14cm of length to spare. That headroom is deliberate. It's what lets you push the mat in one-handed on a cold morning instead of wrestling with it, and it's what leaves room for a strap or a folded towel alongside.

When a mat won't fit

We'd rather you knew before you ordered:

  • Extra-wide mats. Some brands make mats 66–76cm wide for taller practitioners. Rolled, that's a 66–76cm cylinder, and anything past 75cm won't go in. Measure first.
  • Very thick mats. 6mm and above rolls to a wide diameter. If your roll measures more than 14cm across, it won't fit — and forcing it strains the seams.
  • Mats rolled around other things. A blanket or a thick towel rolled inside the mat can add several centimetres of diameter. Carry those alongside instead.

If you're between sizes, measure the diameter rather than guessing. Thirty seconds with a tape measure saves a return.

Cotton or velvet?

Both fit the same mat. The difference is how they live with you.

  • Cotton — €52. Hand-block-printed, quilted, and machine washable on a cool cycle. The one to choose if the bag goes to a studio, gets dropped on floors, and needs washing.
  • Velvet — €62. Plush cotton velvet, deeper pigment, spot-clean only. The one to choose if it's mostly going from car to class, or if you simply want the nicer object.

Every one is hand-block-printed and hand-quilted in Rajasthan, with an adjustable shoulder strap for cross-body carry. Here's how the printing actually works, if you want the long version.

What else goes in

Alongside the mat there's usually room for a strap, a folded hand towel, keys and a phone. Not a water bottle — that's what the tote is for, and it's the reason a lot of people end up carrying both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a standard yoga mat fit a CYC yoga bag?

Yes. A standard mat is about 173cm long and 61cm wide, which rolls into a cylinder roughly 61cm long. Our bags take up to 75cm in length and 14cm in diameter, so a standard mat fits with room to spare.

How do I measure my rolled yoga mat?

Roll the mat as you normally would. Measure the length end to end along the cylinder, then measure straight across one open end for the diameter. Those two numbers are what determine whether a mat fits any bag.

Will a 6mm yoga mat fit?

It depends on the roll. Thicker mats roll to a wider diameter, and our bags take up to 14cm across. Measure the diameter of your rolled mat — if it's under 14cm it will fit, and if it's over, it won't.

Will an extra-long or extra-wide mat fit?

Extra-long is not a problem, because length disappears into the roll. Extra-wide can be. Mats made 66–76cm wide roll into a cylinder of the same length, and anything past 75cm won't fit our bags.

What's the difference between the cotton and velvet yoga bags?

They hold the same size mat. Cotton is €52, quilted, and machine washable on a cool cycle. Velvet is €62, plush cotton velvet with deeper colour, and should be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth rather than washed.

Can I fit anything else in with the mat?

Usually a strap, a folded hand towel, keys and a phone. A water bottle or a rolled blanket will not fit alongside a mat.

Where are they made?

Hand-block-printed and hand-quilted by skilled artisans in small workshops in Rajasthan, India. 10% of profits to grassroots initiatives across India.
